Ryle: State Champs

Perhaps we are seeing the winds of change: the Ryle Raiders end the western dominance of Kentucky high school softball with a state championship, defeating the state's premier program in the process. Ryle was under the radar this season simply because of their geographic location. The Raiders had as good a regular season as a Greenwood, or a Christian County, or an Owensboro Catholic. Ryle finished runners-up to North Hardin in the Ballard Invitational (defeated Lafayette and Christian County while there) and was champion of the Sluggerfest (defeated Christian County, again, and host Allen County-Scottsville). Other wins included South Laurel, Lafayette (again) and Dunbar. Despite rising to #2 in my poll, I didn't give Ryle much of a shot at state against the western powers. Turns out I was wrong, as the Raiders capitalized on a favorable draw, beat Henderson County (in a most regrettable fashion, more on that later), took down North Hardin, and then held off a red-hot Owensboro Catholic team in the end. But what's better news for Ryle, their star pitcher Kirsten (not Kristen, my apologies), is only a sophomore; she'll have two more years to make her mark in Kentucky high school softball. Don't be surprised if this sophomore sensation adds another state championship to her belt before she's done. Congratulations to Ryle for a great season and a most impressive State Championship.

On Friday night, I put my eye on Owensboro Catholic, which had been sent to the loser's bracket. I recalled the 1999 State Tournament, in which the Aces lost early and then won seven straight to take the state championship. As for this year, the Aces won six straight before falling. Credit Coach George Randolph for keeping his team focused after losing early, something the Aces don't do much at state. Even though Owensboro Catholic did not enjoy its best season, they still were nearly good enough to beat everyone else.

North Hardin knew they would have to ride the arm of Jennifer Young (UK-bound, by the way, an excellent choice Jennifer), and the Trojans rode that arm to the best finish by a 5th region team in state history. The Trojans caught everyone's attention early at the Ballard Invitational, and despite disapperaing somewhat during the middle of the season, they came back strong at the end. Congrats to the Trojans for a great season and a big congrats to Young for a great career at North Hardin.

I wouldn't call Butler a Cinderella per se, but the Bears did surprise somewhat by going all the way to 4th after losing in the first round against the state champion. Many people might forget about the 6th region when discussing Louisville softball, but keep in mind that Butler finished 4th at state in 1999 and 2nd in 2001. The Bears have never gone two years without a state tournament appearance, and when the Bears have qualified for state, they have taken advantage. Congrats to Butler for a great season.

Now, finally, our 5th place teams: Henderson County and Greenwood. The Colonels were locked in a fierce battle with Ryle in the winner's bracket semifinal on Saturday morning when Stacy Whitmer suffered a hand injury that knocked her out of play. Ryle took advantage, scoring a run and moving on to the winner's bracket final. The Colonels fell to the consolation bracket and fell quickly to Butler 8-1. There are many "what-ifs" we could play, but unfortunately, Henderson County's chances disapperared with this injury. However, it was a fantastic season for the Colonels, and a spectacular career for Whitmer. Congrats to Henderson County all the way around. As for the Gators, a solid Friday turned sour quickly on Saturday, losing to North Hardin and then to Owensboro Catholic, both by a 3-2 margin. It was a disappointing end for the Gators, who entered as my state tournament favorite (if that meant everything), but it doesn't diminish the season that Greenwood had. Two tournament championships (including Owensboro Catholic's premier event) and a long-last 4th region title over Allen County-Scottsville made it a great season for the Gators. The career of Brittany York, who by the way has been named the 2006 Kentucky Miss Softball, comes to a close, but the Louisville-bound Gator had a spectacular career. By all accounts, she represented the Greenwood program as well as any had before her. Congratulations to her for a great run at Greenwood.

As for this blog, it probably ends today. I cannot thank all of you enough for not only reading my blog, but participating in the comment threads. I didn't know if I would keep this going throughout the season, but your attention gave me enough incentive to keep plugging along. This season has been a great experience for all of us. At this point, I'd like to congratulate all the teams on their seasons, and I'd also like to offer a big congrats to all the seniors out there on their spectacular careers. We've had a lot of fun watching you compete. As for you fans, I hope to return next season with another blog for Kentucky high school softball; hopefully I can take all the criticism I've gotten (hehe) and learn from it. And for high school football and boys' basketball fans, I plan to run blogs on both of those sports next year. Just look out for me on KY Preps for the links. Winners' Semifinal One 9 a.m.
Ryle, as expected, advanced easily through their favorable draw. Henderson County downed the defending state champion Owensboro Catholic is one of the better games from Friday. Now these two will face off, and the game will feature perhaps the state's two best pitchers--sophomore Kristen Allen and senior Stacy Whitmer.

Greenwood v. North Hardin
Winners' Semifinal Two 9 a.m.
Ironically, this semifinal could be viewed as a game between Louisville and Kentucky. Next year, Greenwood's Brittany York will play for the Cards, while North Hardin's Jennifer Young will suit up for the 'Cats. Today, York and Young will likely pitch against one another in this high-stakes game.

Butler v. Woodford County
Consolation Bracket, Game 23 10:30 a.m.
Butler made the move of Friday with an upset win over Mercy. Now the Bears move on to face another Cinderella, the Woodford County Yellow Jackets. The Yellow Jackets stung Reidland and South Laurel on Friday; how many surprises will this team, led by freshman pitcher Kristen Perry, bring on Saturday?

Owensboro Catholic v. Oldham County
Consolation Bracket, Game 24 10:30 a.m.
It has been a wonderful ride for Oldham County for making it through day one of the state tournament. Now, the 8th region champion will face its toughest test. Catholic fell to Henderson County, but began its march through the consolation bracket with a resounding win over Reidland.

It's going to be a fun Saturday in Jeffersontown. It is no coincidence that what many people consider to be the four best pitchers in the state will all be throwing at 9 a.m. tomorrow. But buried deep in the consolation bracket is Owensboro Catholic. Seven years ago, the Aces lost in the second round to the second region team, Christian County, by a score of 1-0. Catholic proceeded to win seven straight games, including the final two against the Colonels, to take their second consecutive state championship. On Friday, Catholic lost in the second round to the second region team, the Henderson County Colonels, by a score of 1-0. Catholic will, once again, need to win seven games to win their second consecutive state championship...one down, six to go.

Alright, enough looking back...let's look ahead to this weekend...

The Favorites
--Henderson County (region 2, 28-11-1)
Things looked bad for the Colonels. A loss to Union County at district matched them up with Christian County at region, but these Colonels persevered and marched to a regional championship. This team finished third at state last season, and with the state's most dominant pitcher in Stacy Whitmer, the Colonels will have a good shot at improving their state finish. Offense is a question, but nine runs scored against Hopkins Central in the regional finale looks promising.

--Owensboro Catholic (region 3, 28-11-1)
After being upset in their own tournament and then stunned in the 9th District Tournament, it seemed that this might be the year that the Aces failed to make the state tournament. Not so fast my friends, as Catholic survived Edmonson County at region and then waltzed to the title. With Megan Aull leading the way, Catholic features an amazingly efficient offensive attack. However, do the Aces have enough pitching to go all the way?

--Greenwood (region 4, 32-6-1)
The Gators return to state for the first time since 2003, fresh off their breakthrough regional championship win over Allen County-Scottsville. Greenwood features two of the state's best arms in Brittany York and Rachel Riley, along with likely the state's best batting lineup. On paper, the Gators look perfect. At the 4th region tournament, the Gators looked perfect. Will "perfect" follow them to Jeffersontown?

--Mercy (region 7, 27-10)
For a Louisville team, the Jaguars aren't really getting a lot of press. But perhaps this weekend will be the weekend when everyone is paying attention to Josh Bloomer's squad. Mercy turned the 7th region into their own personal playground in the postseason, stomping Male, Manual and Ballard by a combined 20-4. Their road to state was as tough as any of the favorites listed here; the Jaguars will be hard to stop if they continue their good play.

VERY Good Chance To Win
--Reidland (region 1, 33-6)
Three of their five postseason runs have come by one run, so while they haven't been dominant like a Mercy or Greenwood, the Greyhounds have learned how to win close games, which is just as an important skill. Reidland's pitching duo of Lane and King rival some of the state's best pitching duos, so pitching shouldn't be a problem for the Greyhounds. However, will there be enough offense to provide insurance runs in tight spots?

--North Hardin (region 5, 28-6)
The Trojans were the talk of Kentucky softball after blowing through the field at the Ballard Tournament in April, but 5th region champ has slid back into the shadows ever since. However, senior Jennifer Young has been one of the state's best pitchers all season, and if North Hardin could dominate the way they did in April, I'd say they still could do the same in June.

--Ryle (region 9, 33-6)
Ryle is the state's biggest mystery. While Whitmer and York and Young get tossed around as state's best pitcher, a Raider sophomore might best them all. Kristen Allen has dominated northern Kentucky this season, and the young pitcher has state tournament experience from a year ago. Ryle has beaten South Laurel, Christian County and Allen County-Scottsville this season, but in the state tournament format, will pitching depth be a problem?

--South Laurel (region 13, 29-9)
The Cardinals might seem like a long shot in this category, but South returns to state for the third consecutive year, this time in the 13th region. They've beaten North Laurel twice, including the regional semifinals, so the Cardinals know how to win in pressure situations. A tough draw might doom them, but this weekend, I assure you, will be full of surprises.

Cinderella, anyone?
--Butler (region 6, 26-9)
Watch out for the Bears here. Perhaps the most underrated team in the state this season, the 6th region champ has defeated Henderson County, North Laurel and Union County. The Bears didn't allow one run in either their district or regional tournaments; in fact, they haven't been scored upon since May 19. Don't expect that streak to continue, but don't be surprised to see the Bears going deep into the state tournament.

--Woodford County (region 11, 19-14)
I recall one comment earlier this year saying that Woodford County deserved to be ranked even though they won't win their region. Well here the Yellow Jackets are, led by one of the state's best young pitchers in Kristen Perry and full of confidence. Woodford County was great early and now appear great late; can the Yellow Jackets sting the best teams at state?

--Estill County (region 14, 24-14)
Haven't we been here before? Last season, the Engineers choo-chooed (I love this verb!) to a fourth place finish at state, stunning everyone in the process. What's to say they can't do it again? They've beaten Manual and Woodford County, and a few more wins this weekend wouldn't be all that surprising.

--Russell (region 16, 28-12)
If experience means anything, then the Red Devils should be sitting pretty: this is Russell's sixth consecutive trip to the state tournament. Last year, they collected two wins and came within a run of upsetting Allen County-Scottsville on Saturday morning. This season, Russell has wins over both the Laurels. Estill County taught us that all Eastern Kentucky teams are not irrelevant at the state level. Could the Red Devils continue this lesson?

Best of the Rest
--Oldham County (region 8, 27-9)
Oldham County came out of the wide open 8th region, but it'll be a tall order for them to make any mark at state outside their first round game against Pulaski County. However, they beat PRP and lost to Manual in 10 innings.

--George Rogers Clark (region 10, 29-11)
The Cardinals took advantage of Estill County's flight from the 10th region by winning the regional championship. Now, GRC gets the enjoyable task of taking on the Greenwood Gators in the first round of the state tournament.

--Pulaski County (region 12, 27-12)
While Danville and Southwestern were predominant favorites in the 12th region, Pulaski County came out of nowhere to take the regional title. Early this season, they fell to North Laurel only by a run, but South Laurel punished them a couple of weeks ago by a 16-3 count.

--Shelby Valley (region 15, 25-11)
This team, at first glance, has an impressive resume. They own wins over Danville, Manual and Larue County. They have the state's all-time leader in wins in Cortney Bentley. However, history works against the Valley here, as the 15th region has only collected three wins at state since fast pitch was born in 1995.

I guess I'll make some predictions tomorrow...

State Tournament Week: Tuesday

There's been some good discussion about who Miss Softball should be, but it looks as if it comes down to two candidates: Henderson County's Stacy Whitmer and Greenwood's Brittany York. Is it too much to ask for these two and their respective teams to meet in the state championship game?

Here's today's question for discussion...

What was the best game of the year?

I have to put my .02 in here: Owensboro Catholic vs. Allen County-Scottsville in the semifinals of the Sports Warehouse Classic was a thriller. The teams went back and forth for the first six innings, and entering the 7th, the score was tied at 4. It seemed that Catholic broke through for good, scoring three runs in the top of the inning. But the Patriots rallied, scoring four runs in the bottom of the 7th, including scoring the tying and winning runs on a pass ball + throwing error. It was some game, but I'm sure there are many more to talk about. What do you think?

What a performance from the Colonels, who began their week with a thrilling comeback against the #1 team in the state and finished it with a dominant win over the Storm.

5th Region: #9 North Hardin (d. Central Hardin 1-0)
One run was enough for the Trojans, who ride the future University of Kentucky arm of Jennifer Young to a regional championship, the first since 2002.

11th Region: Woodford County (d. #14 Lafayette 1-0 in 13 innings)
Upset city, baby! The Generals seemed poised to take the title in easy fashion with Dunbar already gone, but the Yellow Jackets persevere for the big win. Could they be the sleeper at state?

The Gators use tremendous pitching from both Brittany York and Rachel Riley and timely hitting to defeat ACS and return to the state tournament for the first time since 2003.

13th Region: #15 South Laurel (d. Middlesboro 6-0)
The Cardinals will make their third straight state tournament appearance and defeat the 13th region's best team throughout history in the process.

14th Region: Estill County (d. Hazard 6-0)
Once again, Estill County might provide a potential "hazard" to state tournament favorites. The Engineers seem poised for another surprising tournament run.

15th Region: Shelby Valley (d. Pikeville 3-0)
The 15th Region has only won three state tournament games, but Shelby Valley will look to change that this season. Watch out for Cortney Bentley, Valley's senior pitcher who now owns the state record for wins.

16th Region: #23 Russell (d. Raceland 3-1)
Russell lives up to their new ranking by taking care of business in the 16th Region. The Red Devils have won the last five 16th region titles; will that experience finally pay off?

Grant County took down Shelby County to get to the finals. Can the Braves finish off Oldham County and go to the state tournament? Remember, they've already beaten Ryle...

10) Central Hardin vs. Green County (region 5 semifinal)
The winner would likely play North Hardin in the championship game; it's been a down year for Central's Bruins, but a win over the Dragons would help the cause.
9) Meade County vs. Muhlenberg North (region 3 semifinal)
What could have been Grayson County vs. Apollo is this game, but don't sleep on either of these teams if they should meet Owensboro Catholic in the 3rd region final.
8) #6 Reidland vs. Marshall County (region 1 semifinal)
Reidland passed its toughest test in the 1st region by beating St. Mary, but the Greyhounds still have two more games to win, starting with the Marshals.
7) #16 Manual vs. Christian Academy-Louisville (region 7 quarterfinal)
The Crimsons got a very favorable draw, in that both Ballard and Mercy were shipped to the other side of the 7th region bracket. But CA-L might offer a surprise if Manual is caught looking ahead.
6) Shelby County vs. Grant County (region 8 semifinal)
Anderson County is gone in the 8th region, leaving the door open for these two teams; keep in mind that Grant County is one of only two teams who have beaten Ryle (North Hardin).
5) #7 Henderson County vs. Lyon County (region 2 semifinal)
It would be tremendously disappointing for Henderson County to lose now after defeating the #1 team in the state in the quarterfinal round. The Lyons will provide a stiff test.
4) Middlesboro vs. #15 South Laurel (region 13 championship)
South Laurel, once again, beat North Laurel when it counted, and the Cardinals are headed to the 13th region championship. Awaiting them is Middlesboro, who escaped Corbin the other regional semifinal. Many might go ahead and pass South Laurel to the state tournament, but Middlesboro was once king of the 13th region, and it's a fair bet they will come ready to play. Expect a tighter game than first thought.
3) #14 Lafayette vs. Woodford County (region 11 championship)
I've liked Woodford County's chances in the 11th region all season, and tonight, the Yellow Jackets look to become regional champions. But Lafayette, by escaping Scott County in the regional semi, will be favored and looking to get the school's fourth trip to the state tournament.
2) #19 Hopkins County Central vs. #22 Union County (region 2 semifinal)
The Storm and the Braves meet today in what could be a fantastic regional championship in other regions. Expect this one to be close throughout.
1) #3 Greenwood vs. #4 Allen County-Scottsville (region 4 championship)
What wasn't played on April 25 or May 13 will be on May 31, as the Gators and the Patriots really play for the first time this season. The game will be played at Western Kentucky University, site of Greenwood's last regional championship three years ago when the Gators hit a late home run to defeat ACS. It's the Patriots' fourth straight regional championship appearance; can they make it three wins in a row?

The surprise champion of the 9th District faces a stiff test in the first round in Meade County, who was ranked earlier this season.
9) #4 Allen County-Scottsville vs. Bowling Green (region 4)
The Patriots must be on their game against the darkhorse Purples, who was within two runs of Greenwood in the 14th District Championship until late.
8) Bryan Station vs. Woodford County (region 11)
The Defenders and the Yellow Jackets have both flown under the radar in the 11th region.
7) #3 Greenwood vs. Barren County (region 4)
The Gators beat the Trojans 5-0 late this season, but many remember how close Barren County was to pulling the upset in last year's 4th Region Tournament semifinal.
6) #12 Dunbar vs. Madison Central (region 11)
The Indians have beaten Estill County, South Laurel and Southwestern. Dunbar must shake off their blowout district loss to Lafayette if they are to advance.
5) Muhlenberg North vs. #17 Grayson County (region 3)
Grayson County avoids Owensboro Catholic, but they must not overlook the 10th District champion Stars, who rolled up 17 regional wins this season.
4) #6 Reidland vs. St. Mary (region 1)
St. Mary was upset in their district by Ballard Memorial; they must now take on the favorite Greyhounds in the first round.
3) #9 North Hardin vs. #22 Larue County (region 5)
Like St. Mary, Larue County was upset in their district tournament. Like St. Mary, Larue County will have to play their region's finest out of the gate.
2) #18 Edmonson County vs. #5 Owensboro Catholic (region 5)
Edmonson County wins their first district tournament ever, and the reward is a date against the premier program in the state. But this Catholic team is vulnerable, as seen against Apollo.
1) #1 Christian County vs. #7 Henderson County (region 2)
What else would it be? In this Battle of Colonels, it's a safe bet that the first team to 1 will win. The probable pitching matchup between Driver and Whitmer could be the best this postseason has to offer.

It's pretty fair to say that one of these ranked teams will fall to an upset. Follow the scoreboard for regional tournament results.

--#3 Christian County d. #1 Greenwood 9-0
In what was supposed to be a close duel between two top-5 teams, the Colonels of Christian County hit Brittany York again and again for nine runs off 12 hits. Meanwhile, Sarah Driver shut down the Gators offense, limiting them to four hits.

--#3 Christian County d. #12 Mercy 2-1
Christian County's #2 pitcher, 8th grader Stacy Harbold, proved dominant against the homestanding Jaguars, allowing only one hit to Mercy.

--#8 Reidland d. #1 Greenwood 4-0
The Greyhounds pounced on the top-ranked Gators, scoring four runs in the first innings off a few defensive errors and a couple of wild pitches.

--#5 Owensboro Catholic d. #7 North Hardin 4-0
Catholic's offense was it's usual efficient self in a win over the Trojans.

--#14 Ballard d. #7 North Hardin 1-0
This win over the Trojans completes Ballard's week, which featured wins over Grayson County, PRP, Male and Floyd Central (IN).

Analysis: What a difference a week makes for Greenwood. Last Saturday, they were beating Male, Christian County and ACS. Even this week, the Gators outlasted Henderson County at home. But this was Sad Saturday for Greenwood, losing two games and produced nothing on the scoreboard. This makes two sour trips to Louisville on the season for Greenwood. If they get a third chance to make the trip up I-65, will they tank that too? Reidland, Christian County and Owensboro Catholic might have named themselves as the top three contenders for the state championship on this day. And even though they lost two games, Mercy proved to be a threat at the state level, provided the Jaguars escape the 7th region AND Male in the district tournament. North Hardin might be in the same group as Ryle and Henderson County: FANTASTIC pitching, but little hitting. And as for Grayson County, the young Cougars might not be to Owensboro Catholic's level as the last few years, but they will remain a threat this season in the 3rd region.

Well Ballard is in the Thrill and Ryle is not in the Lady Chargers Classic (they're in Lexington playing Heath and #10 Dunbar), so anything I said earlier in the Weekend Tournament Watch should be taken with a grain of salt. Just watch the scoreboard over the weekend for scores between individual teams; tournament play won't be featured much with district tournaments approaching fast.

Thursday and WTW for the Last Time

There were some interesting games on Thursday. Let's discuss...

--#1 Greenwood d. #6 Henderson County 1-0
As expected, this game was low scoring and tight. The Gators proved themselves over the weekend at Owensboro, and now this win proves even more that they are one, if not the, top team in the state. Greenwood has not lost in over a month now. As for Henderson County, will they be able to score enough runs to win? We'll get our answer soon.

--Down the road in Scottsville, #3 Christian County paid a visit to the #4 Allen County-Scottsville Patriots for a glorified scrimmage. Both teams weren't exactly sharp, but the Colonels did enough to outlast ACS 4-1. However, the Patriots, after a few innings, reverted back to a lineup that Greenwood fans would be familiar with.

--#16 Grayson County d. Apollo 7-5 (9 innings)
Apollo, after an impressive showing at the Owensboro tournament over the weekend, is proving themselves to be another landmine in the 3rd region for Owensboro Catholic. Along with the E-Gals and Grayson County, Meade County, Daviess County (Catholic's first round district opponent), Muhlenberg North and, most notably, Edmonson County pose possible threats.

--#14 Ballard d. Pleasure Ridge Park 2-0
Ballard has had a good week. Wins over Grayson County, Male and now this hard-fought win over PRP have validated their ranking in my eyes. But keep an eye on PRP, as they should be the top contender for the 6th region crown outside the Butler Bears.

Analysis: I don't believe this is in classic tournament format (if not, someone correct me), but it should give us a good look at how these teams would fare if they saw each other again. It is possible that these six will return to Louisville for the state tournament. Should be an interesting weekend in the 'Ville.

May Mania

Teams participating: #22 Butler, Meade County, Fern Creek, Boone County, Hopkinsville

Analysis: As with the Thrill, this doesn't seem to be the convention tournament. But I do know this: if Butler doesn't go sweeping through this field, their Upset Alert level goes up for the 6th region tournament, provided they qualify for it.

Lady Chargers Classic

Teams Participating: #2 Ryle, George Rogers Clark, North Oldham, Fairdale, Jeffersontown, Waggener, Seneca

Analysis: Here's our conventional tournament, but there should be little drama to this one. Ryle is the clear favorite here, and this should provide as a nice warmup to tournament action for the Raiders. Plus, this tournament is being held in Jeffersontown; I'm surprised more state contenders aren't rehearsing their trip to the eastern fringes of Louisville.

Pick to win: #2 Ryle

Ballard's Move, Other Events, and Then Thursday

--#14 Ballard d. #9 Male 2-1
I guess all the whining and complaining about how Ballard is overrated can stop, at least for a little while. With a win over Grayson County already in the bag this week, the Bruins went for and captured a bigger win, upsetting the top-ranked team in the seventh region. I would say these two will meet again in the regional tournament, but Mercy may have something to say about that.

--#24 Anderson County d. Danville 2-1
The Admirals' ship is sinking somewhat, as this loss to the Bearcats follows a loss to regional foe Southwestern, who has amassed 21 regional wins this season. Meanwhile, Anderson County seems to have established itself as the favorite in the 8th region, as district rival Shelby County was upset by Trimble County last night.

--#2 Ryle d. Holmes 10-0
Ryle hasn't lost since in exactly a month when it lost to Grant County. The Raiders have ruled the 9th region this year with an iron fist, and if there's any team in the state that seems the most immune to upset in the district and regional tournaments, it looks like it's Ryle.

This is, hopefully, a matchup between one of the best hitting teams in the state (Greenwood) and one of the best pitchers in the state (Stacy Whitmer). What gives? This might be the most appealing matchup we've seen all year.

Looking back at Tuesday...

--#1 Greenwood d. #5 Owensboro Catholic 3-2 (3 innings)
By Wednesday morning, this score had been pulled from KHSAA's scoreboard, so I'm assuming it will not go down as an official game, and it shouldn't seeing it was only three innings long. In any case, we know one thing from this short contest: the difference between the #1 and the #5 team in the state is little to none.

--#9 Male d. PRP 12-0
PRP had been making noise in the 6th region, but the probable challenger to Butler in that region made no noise on Tuesday. Male, along with Mercy, is the favorite in the 7th region. Of course, those two teams will play in the first round of the 25th District Tournament.

--#17 Manual d. Oldham County 4-3 (10 innings)
Manual is the other team making the 25th the strongest district in the state, but it's Oldham County that made a statement here. The 8th region will be very interesting, with Anderson County and Shelby County leading the way. But don't sleep on Oldham, whose quick start got them ranked but haven't made any noise of late.

These were two struggling teams that were in search for a quality win. Ballard got it, but a questionable third strike call in the 7th inning in the middle of a Cougar rally left some Bruin fans unsatisfied. Nevertheless, it is a quality win for Ballard, while the Cougars headed back to Leitchfield with another close loss.

--#1 Greenwood d. #25 Barren County 5-0
The Trojans looked to become the definitive third team in the 4th region, and despite losing to the Gators, perhaps they made a statement that warns Greenwood and ACS for the regional tournament. Greenwood gets a quality win after the Owensboro affair.

--#13 Lafayette d. Henry Clay 2-0, 3-1
The Generals, along with Dunbar, are the two favorites in the 11th region, but Henry Clay might have added itself to the long list of challengers, which includes Woodford County, Bryan Station, Lexington Catholic, Western Hills, Madison Central, and, most notably, Scott County.

Game of the day...
#1 Greenwood @ #5 Owensboro Catholic
What could have been at the Sports Warehouse Classic will now be today in Owensboro. This matchup between arguably the two best teams in the state may very well be a state championship preview. With this win, Greenwood will leave no doubt who the #1 team in the state is. But if Catholic wins, as many as five teams could lay claims to the top spot.

For those who were wondering, here are a few more items from Saturday in Owensboro...

--The semifinals in the championship bracket were both terrific. The ACS-Owensboro Catholic game was back and forth all the way. Both teams hit the ball well, despite which pitcher was throwing for either team. Owensboro Catholic scored 3 in the top of the 7th, but ACS rallied for 4 in the bottom of the inning to win the game. In the second semifinal, Greenwood likewise rallied for a 3-2 win over Christian County. It looked like the Colonels would hold the hot-hitting Gators down, but Greenwood got hot in the 5th and 6th innings to win the game.

--There hasn't been much chatter about the game going on opposite of ACS-Greenwood. Male and Mercy played for the #2 seed championship. These two teams meet in the first round of the DISTRICT tournament, but both teams appeared to play their best personnel (if anyone can verify that, thanks) as the game went down to the wire with Male winning 5-4.

--Despite cries on the comment threads of Ballard being overrated, I didn't think the Bruins looked that bad. They hit the ball well against Daviess County, and then played pretty well against Henderson County considering Stacy Whitmer was throwing a lot of strikes. However, in retrospect, #14 is a little high for the Bruins, but rankings don't mean squat.

--Finally, I'd like to congratulate Owensboro Catholic for holding a great tournament. The rain held off, the wind stopped blowing when it got really cold, and the tiebreaker idea in pool play was ingenious. The championship game began only 30-45 minutes after its scheduled time.

For my weekend review, allow me to play a little word association with some teams I watched closely in Owensboro...

--Owensboro Catholic: "machine"
If the Aces get the lead-off runner on, a run will most likely score. This team, offensively, is so disciplined. If a team makes a defensive mistake against Catholic, it's like making two mistakes. This kind of offensive efficiency will keep Catholic a contender for the remainder of the season.

--Greenwood: "power"
Playing on a field in which the wind blew out, the Gators turned the Green field at Fisher Park into a home run derby. While Catholic will hit a single and then beat you with baserunning, Greenwood would rather just hit the ball over your head. The Gators will not go quietly.

--Henderson County: "strikeout"
Meanwhile, Henderson County's ace Stacy Whitmer wouldn't allow for any hits of any kind, as she hosted her own 'K' party against ACS and Ballard. In a weekend chalked full of great pitchers, there was not doubt which pitcher looked the most dominant.

--Allen County-Scottsville: "guts"
Let's ignore the Greenwood game for a minute. The Patriots showed the most grit and toughness this weekend, rallying from two 7th-inning deficits, including a four-run seventh to beat Owensboro Catholic. This continues a distinct pattern from ACS, who likes to back itself against a wall.

Two teams that have been slipping since the first part of the year, both the Cougars and the Bruins need a big win. Ballard did not play badly over the weekend, but did finish third in its pool and failed to score against both ACS and Henderson County.

Greenwood 14 ACS 4 (6 innings)

After Greenwood’s 3-2 semifinal win over Christian County, the much-anticipated matchup between the Gators and regional nemesis Allen County-Scottsville would occur some two-and-a-half weeks early. The Patriots had advanced to the final of the Owensboro Catholic Sports Warehouse Classic earlier by scoring an upset victory of the top-ranked and host Aces. So, for the Classic championship, it would be the Gators and the Patriots, one of the hottest rivalries in Kentucky high school softball.

But as soon as the Patriots sent their first three batters to the plate, it was clear what ACS head coach Brad Bonds was doing. Fresh off their big win over Owensboro Catholic (arguably the biggest win by any team in Kentucky this season), Bonds sent his JV team in to battle the #2 Gators, leaving star pitcher Jamie Ogles to sit on a trash can in the dugout, top catcher Megan Williams wrapped in a blanket and the rest of the Patriot starters to twiddle their thumbs while watching the Gators pound their way to a hollow championship victory.

So who wins and who loses from this decision? Who looks smart and who looks stupid? Here’s my opinion…

The Biggest Winner: 4th region competition

While everyone and their mother will be anticipating and hyping the Greenwood-ACS “rematch” in the regional tournament, underdogs like Barren County, Bowling Green/Warren East (they play in the first round of the district) and Franklin-Simpson will be lurking with absolutely no pressure on their collective shoulders. If the draw works out the way it should, both ACS and Greenwood will have to clear two hurdles before meeting each other. Remember last year: Barren County and Franklin-Simpson pushed Greenwood and ACS, respectively, to the brink in the regional semifinals. With so much attention given to the regional titans, don’t be surprised if one of these teams gives the Gators and Patriots a run. (Note: Barren County beat #18 Edmonson County 5-0 on Saturday)…

Winner: Brad Bonds

Bonds has only been in charge of the ACS softball program for a year-and-a-half, but he is already making his mark as the leader of the program. Last season, he weathered his ace pitcher's nagging shoulder injury and stretches of offensive incompetance to stun Greenwood in the 4th region final. This season, his Patriot team has furthered its ability to rally in ballgames (see Grayson County, Daviess County and Owensboro Catholic this past week). But this decision might be the most noteworthy of them all. By dodging the Gators, Bonds only adds another element to the mental challenge that Greenwood must solve in order to topple the Patriots.

Winner: Greenwood

Motivation should not have been a concern for Brittany York and company if the Gators were to meet the Patriots in the 4th region final. ACS has dismissed Greenwood from the regional tournament for the last two years, and both years Greenwood was an overwhelming favorite to come out on top. This is still the case this year, as Greenwood returned everyone from a team that was ranked top-5 in the state for much of last season. Greenwood, especially York, should be eager to get the monkey off the back, and the fact that the Patriots would gladly give them a seasonal championship should fire up the Gators even more for the chance to finally get rid of the Patriot pest once and for all.

Loser: Penny Reece

A quick look down the third base line during a Greenwood at-bat would reveal the feelings of Greenwood’s head coach. A win over Christian County would give her team a chance to ease the tension left from June 1, 2005 when the Patriots upset the Gators in spectacular fashion. Perhaps just playing the Patriots would give her team a mental edge if they should see them again in the regional tournament. But across the field, Brad Bonds was devising a clever strategy to make sure that didn’t happen, proving once again to be a step ahead of Reece. Remember, it was Bonds who wisely rotated Maleiah Cornwell with Jamie Ogles in the regional final a year ago, while Reece stuck with Brittany York instead of going with Rachel Riley when York faltered late. There’s a lot of pressure on Greenwood to succeed, but perhaps there is just as much on Reece now to measure up with Bonds’s moves.

Loser: Softball fans

It was a long, cold, blustery day at Jack C. Fisher Park in Owensboro, but it was full of good softball and good times. After Allen County-Scottsville took down Owensboro Catholic and Greenwood rallied to defeat Christian County, the stage was set for an epic final to the Sports Warehouse Classic. But with Bonds’s decision to hold his cards until the potential regional final, softball fans were disappointed to find that this great matchup between two of the state’s elite would become nothing more than a glorified scrimmage. For the most neutral of fan, it was a disappointing end to an exhilarating day of fast pitch softball.

The Biggest Loser: Owensboro Catholic

The Aces had already had a bad day, losing for the first time to a Kentucky team in Allen County-Scottsville and then appearing flat as a pancake in a loss to Christian County. Then, the coaches, players and fans of Catholic watch their tournament ultimately turn into Brad Bonds and ACS’s pawn in their mental chess game with the Greenwood Gators. It wasn’t an intentional slap in Catholic’s face, but it cannot be argued that this move was a clear indication of what some teams feel about these weekend tournaments in the large scope of things. However, don’t sleep on Catholic. They are still the state champions and the favorite for this year’s championship until beaten when it matters.

I can argue that this is an objective account of this decision, but with my educational background being rooted in Scottsville, I would be lying. Feel free to comment on who you think are the winners and losers from this move made by ACS.

Soggy Thursday and Weekend Tournament Watch

Thursday was washed out in many locales around the state, but several games were played, and they were big ones...

--#12 Allen County-Scottsville d. #15 Grayson County 8-7
The Patriots score 7 in the 5th innings with 2 outs to top the Cougars despite a rash of defensive miscues. It appears both of these teams have a ways to go in order to challenge their respective regional favorites, Greenwood and Owensboro Catholic. ACS's defense will be further tested this weekend at the Owensboro Catholic Tournament.

--#7 Reidland d. #25 St. Mary 2-1
Perhaps the 1st region is not a Greyhound shoo-in after all. One day after being pushed to the limit by Lone Oak, Reidland survives a road test at cross-town St. Mary. While the 2nd, 3rd and 4th regional tournaments will grab the majority of the attention out west, keep your eye on Reidland as possible upset bait in the 1st region tournament.

--#6 Christian County d. Lyon County 6-0
The Lyons have had a great year, but it looks as if they won't be competing for the 2nd region title. The list of contenders in the wide open 2nd is probably four: Chrisitian County, Henderson County, Hopkins County Central and Union County. However, to Lyon County's credit, they are one run shy of allowing the fewest runs in the 2nd region.

Now, for our Weekend Tournament Watch...

Lowe’s Classic

Site: London

Teams Participating: #10 North Laurel, #13 Manual, #14 South Laurel, #20 Larue County, Estill County, Rockcastle County, Dixie Heights, Assumption, Russell, Shelby Valley

Analysis: While most of the state’s powers are in Owensboro, several do make the trip to London in this very solid tournament. The Laurels, combined with Manual and Larue County, form an interesting contenders list. But don’t count out any school in this field; all have the capability of beating each other.

Pick to win: #13 Manual

It's probably the strongest in-state tournament of the regular season (with the possible exception of the Ballard Invitational), so I'm doing an in-depth preview for the tournament. I'm also planning to head up to Owensboro to watch the action on Saturday, so I'm pretty excited about this tournament as well. Tournament Analysis: This tournament should be a great indication of who can compete on the state level and who may not have what it takes this year. The teams that play well this weekend will likely make noise in Jeffersontown on the second weekend in June. But who will win this weekend? Common sense says the pick is Owensboro Catholic. The Aces are on home turf and the same turf that they captured last year's state championship. They are also the #1 team in the state. But to make my decision on a winner, I'm seeing a team that will likely not be tested in pool play, and thus won't have to burn their big arms on Friday night and Saturday morning. That team is Greenwood. The #2 team in the state has been rolling lately, and with an easy pool (Union County could challenge though), the Gators will be fresh on Saturday night and will defeat Owensboro Catholic in a thrilling championship game. However, a tournament championship here will only increase the immense pressure on Coach Penny Reece and the rest of the Gators to return to the state tournament for the first time since 2003.

Dunbar is running on all systems go right now. After sweeping their Round Robin Tournament over the weekend, the Bulldogs emphatically defeat the Knights and perhaps establish themselves as the 11th region favorite over Lafayette and the rest of the crowd.

--#22 Scott County d. #23 Anderson County 2-1
It's been a tough two days for the Bearcats. After returning to the rankings via a win over North Laurel, Anderson County has dropped two consecutive games to Woodford County and now Scott County. Fortunately for the Bearcats, neither team will challenge them in the 8th region tournament.

--#11 Ballard d. Clarksville (IN) 3-0
The Bruins needed a win to right the ship before the Owensboro Catholic Tournament this weekend, and this was a win to right the ship. In any case, look for the Bruins to make some noise this weekend in Owensboro.

Last year, the Estill County Engineers stunned everyone on their run to a 4th place finish in the state tournament. The Engineers were under .500 going into the state tournament, but came out of the tournament as the fourth best team in the state. At this time last year, nobody was talking up Estill County's chances at state. Who are some teams this year that could fill Cinderella's shoe at state (provided they win their region, of course)?

--Union County (2, 18-11, 7-4)
Despite being in one of the toughest regions in the state, don't sleep on the Braves. Henderson County and Christian County should be the top contenders for the Region 2 title, but Union County will be a force. The Braves already have wins over North Hardin, Apollo and even Henderson County; their performace this weekend at Owensboro Catholic's tournament will shed more light on the Braves' chances at state if they should advance.

--Edmonson County (3, 20-6, 8-1)
The Wildcats moved from a two-titan region (the 4th) to another two-titan region (the 3rd), but this season, Edmonson County might have a shot at advancing past the district and regional rounds. Already, the Wildcats have beaten Grayson County (much like they defeated ACS last season), but they own impressive wins over St. Mary, Hopkins Central and Apollo as well. The key: how will they perform against dominant power Owensboro Catholic if given the chance?

--Larue County (5, 17-8, 11-1)
After an extremely slow start to the season, the Hawks are running on all cylinders now and focused on defending their 5th regional championship. They've won 15 of 18, with wins over Dunbar, Grayson County and (most importantly) regional favorite North Hardin. Their losses: Ballard, Mercy and Henderson County. An appearance in the Lowe's Classic (at North Laurel) this weekend will test the Hawks' status as state sleeper.

--Butler (6, 18-6, 9-1)
Perhaps they are overshadowed as the 7th region's ugly stepsister, but the 6th region's probable representative at state (PRP will challenge though), Butler, may make noise if they get to J-Town. A win over Ballard, the defending state runner-up, proves the Bears' worth. Now, the challenge will be to avoid upsets in district and regional tournaments.

--Anderson County (8, 21-7, 4-0)
Scott County's exit from the 8th region leaves a hole from last year's state tournament, and the Bearcats of Anderson County may be poised to take it. The Bearcats have tested themselves outside the 8th region and own wins over PRP, Barren County and Lexington Catholic. But most impressively was a 0ne-hitter thrown by Colleen Fitzpatrick in a 4-0 win over North Laurel. If the Bearcats can avoid the wide-open 8th region field, they could make a move a state.

--George Rogers Clark (10, 21-9, 9-0)
Estill County moved away from this region, and like the 8th, a state void was created. Keep your eyes on Winchester, where the Cardinals of George Rogers Clark are making a move. They boast wins over Rockcastle County and Holy Cross, but an underfeated regional record proves the Cardinals are the team to beat.

--Scott County (11, 19-8, 8-2)
Dunbar and Lafayette are getting most of the press in the 11th region, but to the north, newcomer Scott County is putting together an impressive inaugural season in their new region. The Cardinals have big wins over Anderson County, North Laurel, Estill County and Shelby County. Remember, many of these girls have state experience already, as Scott County won the 8th region last season.

--Danville (12, 15-12, 7-2)
After the 12th region lost its Laurels (North and South), the field became wide open in this central Kentucky region. The Admirals of Danville have made the biggest state impression so far this season, owning wins over Lafayette, Edmonson County and (yes) North Laurel. However, the 12th region is as wide open as any region in state, so Danville could be upset at region. But if they get to state, don't be surprised if the Admirals sink a few ships.

--Russell (16, scoreboard technical difficulties)
Hidden in the shadows of Eastern Kentucky are the Red Devils of Russell, but it doesn't mean the 16th region can't send a sleeper to the state tournament. Remember, Russell went to state last season and played well, nearly upsetting Allen County-Scottsville in the consolation bracket. The Red Devils are worth watching again if they advance from the 16th region.

And finally...

--Estill County (14, scoreboard technical difficulties)
Yeah, why not? The Engineers are the prohibitive favorite in the 14th region, their new home after switching from the 10th region last season. Despite having a difficult early season, it's not like Estill County has been down and out in April or May before. If the Engineers choo-choo through the 14th, watch them at state to see if their Cinderella express continues to roll.

The Bruins have not tested themselves against many of the 7th region's best this season, but when they have, they've usually lost. Right now, don't expect Ballard to repeat as 7th region champions. As for the Crimsons, this win puts them right at the top with Male and Mercy.

The list of challengers for the Greyhounds in the 1st region appeared to be short (St. Mary), but perhaps the Purple Flash of Lone Oak served notice in this district battle.

After their win against Lafayette in the Christian County Tournament, I assumed the Admirals were the team to beat in the 12th region. However, newcomer Rockcastle County has designs on returning to the state tournament, this time from the 12th region.

--Hopkins County Central d. #3 Henderson County 4-2
At first glance, it's a giant upset in the 2nd region. However, the Colonels did not send their ace Stacy Whitmer to the circle for this one, continuing a trend from Henderson County of not throwing the ace against top-flight competition in the region. But props to the Storm for the big win nonetheless.

I finally got the chance to watch ACS play this season (the Patriots defeated Franklin-Simpson 2-0 on Thursday), and I'll tell you one thing: home runs are fun to watch. Anyway, here's a look at Thursday's highlights...

--#3 Henderson County d. Lyon County 9-1
After being routed by Owensboro Catholic and placed on Upset Alert, the Colonels responded by taking down the Lyon County Lyons in impressive fashion. Still, outside the 7th region, the 2nd region is the deepest region in the state.

--#15 South Laurel d. Estill County 12-2
The Engineers seem to have lost all the magic at this point, but props go to the Cardinals here. After being very inconsistent over the first few weeks of the season, it looks as if South Laurel is putting all the pieces together for a regional championship run.

--#19 Edmonson County d. Apollo 2-1
Don't overlook Apollo in the 3rd region. Even though they shouldn't pose a threat to fellow 9th district foe Owensboro Catholic, Grayson County and Edmonson County should be wary of them if they should reach the regional tournament.

In an impressive statement, the Generals came back from their first nine-inning game to take down the Crimsons, this one as well in nine innings. It was good day for Lafayette.

In response to being put on Upset Alert, the Patriots brought out the bats to beat down district rival Barren County. Once again, there seems to be separation between the Gators and the Patriots from the rest of the 4th region.

--#1 Owensboro Catholic left no doubt on who the best team in the state is, as the Aces stomped #3 Henderson County 8-1 in Owensboro. The Colonels' ace, Stacy Whitmer, left the circle in the 4th inning with health problems, and the Aces jumped on her replacement very quickly. Despite the blowout loss, don't cross out the Colonels as a state championship contender.

--#24 Larue County is quickly establishing themselves as a state power once more. The Hawks upset #11 Grayson County 6-3 in Hodgenville. As for the Cougars, they've lost 4 of 7 (the other three losses were all to ranked teams).

Quick Analysis

It's a pretty fair draw in my opinion. My attention is grabbed by that region 13 v. region 3 game in the first round, which will likely be one of the Laurels against Owensboro Catholic. I think the weakest first round game is region 8 v. region 12, but things will change before June.

Mid-Season Review

I'd say we're halfway through the season by now, and combine that with the fact that Dale Jr. just blew his engine at Talledega, I need something to do.

So here we go: a little review at what the last of March and April taught us, and a sneak peek at what May and June may have in store...

SURPRISES

--North Hardin (20-4)
The Trojans shocked everyone by winning the Ballard Invitational, arguably the top weekend tournament this season. Behind senior pitcher and Miss Softball candidate Jennifer Young, expect North Hardin to take the 5th region and contend for a state championship.

--Union County (15-9)
Flying WAY under the radar in the 2nd region are the Braves, but recent wins have propelled Union County up the rankings. Wins over North Hardin and Grayson County have been extremely noteworthy, and they've lost to Christian County, ACS, Hopkins County Central and Owensboro Catholic by a combined 6 runs.

--The 11th Region
Lexington didn't produce squat last year, but this season, many teams from the Heart of the Bluegrass are playing well. Dunbar (16-5), Lafayette (17-6), Scott County (17-6), Woodford County (10-9) and Western Hills (11-6) have all been ranked at some point this season.

DISAPPOINTMENTS

--Grayson County (19-8)
Perhaps expectations were too high for the Cougars, but early season wins over Meade County and Christian County made Grayson County look very, very good. Their last three losses have been by a combined 20 runs, and two of those losses are to regional rivals. But with nine sophomores in the fold, expect the Cougars to grow and learn as the season progresses.

--Greenwood (16-4)
A poor showing at the Ballard Invitational has soured what has been a solid opening campaign for the Gators. Like Grayson County, expectations were through the roof for this squad which returned everyone from a team that should have won its region last year. A rainout at ACS ruined a chance for the Gators to reaffirm their status in the state's eyes.

--Estill County (11-8)
Everyone's favorite Cinderella from last season's state tournament was ranked preseason in the mid-teens, but the Engineers have struggled mightily. Ugly losses to Bryan Station, Pikeville and Model have hurt their status so far. But at this point last year, Estill County was 4-7, so don't sleep on them just yet.

MYSTERY TEAMS

--Ballard (12-2)
The defending 7th region champions are currently ranked highest in their region, but are they the best team? The Bruins have beaten Manual and lost to Mercy, and that's about it when it comes to top regional competition. Ballard does own a win over Scott County and lost by only a run to Christian County, but that's about it as far as highlights so far.

--Allen County-Scottsville (15-6)
While Greenwood continues to get most of the headlines in the 4th region, ACS continues to fly under the radar. The Patriots have beaten Manual but own no other really significant wins. However, wins over Union County and Barren County might improve as the season progresses. But the Patriots' offense seems to be thriving, as ACS has notched at least 15 runs in four games this season.

--Hopkins County Central (17-4)
Henderson County and Christian County lead the way, and Union County and Lyon County are making noise as well. But somewhere in between in the 2nd region pecking order is the Storm. They've beaten Union County, but besides that, there is nothing impressive to put on the resume. The next two weeks, with games against Henderson County and Lyon County, along with the O-Cath tourney, will predict the Storm's path.

Who were the champs and the chumps from this weekend's action?

CHAMPS

--#7 Ryle seems poised for a run at the state championship. After finishing runner-up to North Hardin at the Ballard Invitational, the Raiders won this weekend's Sluggerfest VII in Scottsville, defeating host #14 Allen County-Scottsville in the championship game. Ryle also beat #4 Christian County over the weekend.

--#12 North Laurel dispatched #9 Grayson County among others at the Kentucky Prep Five Star Showcase in London. Both of the Laurels have been inconsistent so far this year, but the Jaguars put it all together this weekend to win in impressive fashion.

CHUMPS

--The KHSAA (or whoever makes this rule) for instituting game limits. #4 Christian County had to pull out of Sluggerfest VII because of this rule. If anyone knows more about this rule, leave a comment in the comments thread please. Thanks.

--#3 North Hardin seemed to have the 5th region all but wrapped up, but Larue County apparently has designs on returning to the state tournament, as the Hawks routed the Trojans 9-5.

Analysis: ACS is a mystery team. Much like Hopkins County Central, the Patriots have not been heavily tested by state competition so far this year, having only played Reidland and Manual. Of course, their Tuesday showdown with Greenwood was rained out. Their home tournament will prove just how good a chance ACS has against the Gators.

Did it ever on Thursday...

--#22 Union County validated my ranking of them this week by stunning #2 Henderson County 3-2. The 2nd region is quickly becoming a monster, with Christian County and Hopkins County Central also expected to contend for the regional championship.

--Edmonson County will most certainly jump back into the rankings, as the Wildcats destroyed #9 Grayson County 7-0. Grayson County is young, but the chances of them contending for the regional title with Owensboro Catholic look slimmer by the day.

Other scores that caught my eye...

--#16 Manual d. #18 Butler 1-0
While the Crimsons have been up-and-down this season, this is a score that makes me believe that Butler may be able to perform well at the state tournament (if they get there).

--#15 Mercy d. Christian Academy-Louisville 2-1
Not many people are talking about the Centurions in the wild and wacky seventh region.

Rain played havoc with many of Kentucky's softball tournaments over the weekend, and the games went on until 5 o'clock Sunday morning in some areas. Here is a short review of what we think happened...

LADY COLONEL CLASSIC

#7 Henderson Co. d. Riverdale, TN 2-1 in 9 innings.
#15 Mercy d. Evansville Memorial 3-2.
Evansville Memorial d. Riverdale 3-0.
#5 Christian County d. #10 Lafayette 3-1.
#14 Allen Co.-Scottsville d. #16 Manual 5-3.
#19 Hopkins Central d. Ezell-Harding, TN 4-0.
Franklin-Simpson d. Brentwood Academy, TN 3-2.
Wilson Central, TN d. #2 North Hardin 4-1.
Christian Academy of Louisville d. Bolton, TN 2-1.

--In sweet sixteen action, Danville and Union County scored major upsets over #10 Lafayette and #2 North Hardin, respectively. Other state winners included #5 Christian County (d. #23 Fern Creek) and #7 Henderson County (d. Bolton, TN). Out of state winners were Riverdale (TN) (d. #19 Hopkins County Central), Wilson Central (TN) (d. Calloway County), Evansville Memorial (IN) (d. Warren Central) and Ezell-Harding (TN) (d. #14 Allen County-Scottsville, as the Patriots committed a stunning 11 errors).

--In the quarterfinals, #5 Christian County held off Union County 1-0, Riverdale (TN) stopped Danville's cinderella run, #7 Henderson County won as their opponent Evansville Memorial (IN) forfeited from the tournament and Wilson Central (TN) beat Ezell-Harding (TN).

--In an all-2nd region semifinal game, #7 Henderson County upset #5 Christian County 4-2. Neither team threw their ace in this game (HCHS--Whitmer, CCHS--Driver). Riverdale (TN) defeated Wilson Central (TN) in the other semifinal.

--Riverdale, TN defeated #7 Henderson County 1-0 in the championship game.

UPS MIDWEST CATHOLIC CHALLENGE

I cannot tell you who won the tournament, but #1 Owensboro Catholic went 3-1 with wins over Schlarman (IL), St. Mary and McAuley (IL). The lone loss came to Scecina Memorial (IL) by a 1-0 count. St. Mary of Paducah also did well in the tournament, going 2-2 with a win over Assumption.

CAPITAL CITY CLASSIC

Scott County will return to the rankings, as the Cardinals upset #13 North Laurel in the championship game by a 4-2 score. It also looks as if Anderson County will enter the rankings as well, as they went 4-1 in the tournament, including a win over regional foe #20 Shelby County.

BIG 8 CLASSIC

Not sure who won the Big 8 Classic, but here are some scores from the tournament that raised my eyebrows...

--#11 South Laurel d. #6 Reidland 3-2
--Russell d. #11 South Laurel 3-2 (9 innings)
--Madison Central d. #11 South Laurel 1-0

I'm guessing either Madison Central or Russell won the tournament. Either way, both teams will likely enter the rankings later today.

As expected, #4 Greenwood won this tournament rather easily, although a 3-2 win over Apollo was an interesting score.

This is interesting because Christian County, with the possible exception of Owensboro Catholic, has tested themselves the most against national competition. The host is playing by their own rules. But I’m still not picking them to win.

Upset Tuesday

There were several Top 25 teams that were upset during Tuesday's action...

--#3 Ryle might have played well at the Ballard Invitational, but yesterday the 9th region power was stunned by, of all teams, Grant County in a thrilling 2-1 game that took nine innings. What does this do for northern Kentucky softball. 1) Shelby County might be hearing more footsteps in the 8th region and 2) Ryle might not be the regional juggernaut that most figured them to be.

--What does #25 Western Hills do to celebrate their ranking in my prestigious poll? They lose to district rival Franklin County 7-5.

--#22 Estill County really hasn't done anything big to validate their 4th place run at the 2005 State Tournament, and their 3-0 loss to Model won't really help the Engineers' cause.

--One of the more pleasant surprises so far this season was #24 Edmonson County, but the Wildcats took a step back last night in losing to regional foe Ohio County 4-0.

I'm not ready to crown favorites in the 7th region yet (I don't think I will be for a good while), but the Mercy Jaguars are looking really good right now. Last night, #15 Mercy took down #16 Manual 4-1 in a battle of 7th region powers. Check out this report from the Courier-Journal.

The 7th region is probably the most intriguing region in the state; it is no doubt the toughest. Think about it: Ballard, Manual, Mercy, Male, Fern Creek, Assumption, Sacred Heart, etc. Which of these teams will get it done when it counts? It bears watching as the season unfolds.

Analysis: To say the least, this is the best tournament we've seen so far this year. It is also one of those tournaments that would measure stronger than the state tournament in June. Look for the teams that do well here this week to have a serious shot at winning it all.

LADY LAKER CLASSIC

OLDHAM COUNTY TOURNAMENT

Analysis: At first glance, it might seem that this tournament serves as a "Ballard-reject" event. Not the case, as two ranked teams play and several others who are on the cusp of ranking are competing. Should be as competitive a tournament as we've seen so far this season.

BULLDOG BASH III

Teams participating: Conner, Grant County, Bracken County, Owen County, Holmes, Bowling Green, John Hardin, Highlands, Boyd County, Dixie Heights, Pendleton County, Fairview, Notre Dame, Campbell County, Bishop Brossart

Analysis: There are no ranked teams participating in this tournament; it's basically a regional tournament full of 8th, 9th and 10th region teams. However, there are some southern foreigners in this "Bash" to keep an eye on.

Well after successfully defeating an evil virus on my computer (which ironically was a Trojan, take that Barren County), let's take a look back at how some of the state's top teams did down south (and up north, which would be Kentucky)...

--#1 Greenwood (2-2 in Alabama)
The two losses came by a combined two runs. Finished their trip with a 9-1 beatdown of Fairhope, AL.

--#2 Owensboro Catholic (2-0)
Started the season 2-4-1 in Florida and Tennessee, but returned home to win two games by a 26-1 count.

--#5 Henderson County (2-0)
Won two games this week after stumbling midly at the TSOA Tournament with losses to North Hardin and Butler.

--#7 Christian County (1-3 in California)
Went west to California instead of south to Alabama. Dropped first three games of tour before shutting out Huntington Beach, CA 3-0.

--#8 Ryle (0-1 in Florida)
Only one game from their tournament has been reported, and that was a loss to Assumption 3-2.

--#9 Allen County-Scottsville (0-3 in Alabama)
Two one-run losses for the Patriots, but perhaps some consolation lies in the fact that Greenwood did not beat a team that ACS lost to.

Things From Tuesday

There are many more scores to talk about this morning than there were yesterday. Let's take a look at what Tuesday taught us...

--#2 Owensboro Catholic and #5 Henderson County both dusted off regional rivals yesterday. Catholic stomped cross-town rival Daviess County 12-1 and the Colonels put away Union County 13-3 in 5 innings. I'd say it's a safe bet that we'll hear from these two teams all year.

--Oh yeah, add #3 Grayson County to that bunch, as the Cougars continue to be this season's most impressive team; a 13-0 rout of Nelson County only adds to the accomplishments so far.

--From Alabama, #1 Greenwood battled back from an opening-week loss to down Foley, AL 3-2. To the south, #11 Reidland fell to Gulf Shores, AL 6-5 in 9 innings. Franklin County played Robertsdale, AL (the team that beat Greenwood on Monday), but there hasn't been a score reported on that game. Nevertheless, some of Kentucky's best are competing well with some of Alabama's best ocean teams.

--And in the 12th region, Southwestern defeated Pulaski County 4-1. Look for Southwestern and Boyle County Invitational champion Danville to battle it out in the now Laurel-less region.

--Also, a KY Preps report says Bowling Green upset #20 Edmonson County 1-0 in 8 innings. Remember, this is an Edmonson County team that beat #16 Hopkins Central and St. Mary (who was ranked last week) in the Warren East Invitational. Greenwood, are you paying attention?

As for Wednesday...

--#7 Christian County continues their California crusade, as the Colonels battle Downey, CA.

--#9 Allen County-Scottsville looks to even up their Alabama record as the Patriots take on the Dolphins of Gulf Shores, AL.

--We'll continue to monitor games in the 11th Annual Florida Beach Bash and the Disney Sports Tournament. Scores are extremely slow coming out of those warmer areas, but we'll try to recap those tournaments when they end later this week.

It seems un-American that ACS and Greenwood would not go down to the end in the 4th region. This serves as some evidence that the two teams may be as evenly matched as ever.

Now Grayson County and Owensboro Catholic should be nervous that Edmonson County has entered the 3rd region.

Boyle County Invitational

There are many games not posted here, but this article from the Danville A-M sheds some light on the tournament's events. Basically, this tournament served as a 12th regional tournament preview. --TSOA Tournament (Meade County)

Teams Participating: Southern, Mercy, Bishop Brossart, Sacred Heart, Henderson County, George Rogers Clark, North Hardin, Breckinridge County, North Hardin, Grayson County, Butler, Meade County, Daviess County, Central Hardin

Analysis: What will it take to get a Henderson County-Grayson County matchup? Come on, we're begging to see it. Those aren't the only two good teams there though. Sacred Heart, Mercy, North Hardin, Meade County and Butler are all ranked.

--Warren East Invitational (Warren East)

Teams Participating: Barren County, Warren Central, Warren East, John Hardin, Edmonson County, Russellville, Muhlenberg South, Hopkins County Central, Owensboro, Russell County, St. Mary, Jeffersontown

Analysis: Not as many good teams in this field, but still it should be a solid tournament. Look for Hopkins County Central to win it, but don't be surprised to see Edmonson County and St. Mary have a say in things.

--Boyle County Invitational (Boyle County)

Teams Participating: Lincoln County, Casey County, Mercer County, Danville, Rowan County, McCreary Central, Bell County, Southwestern, Wayne County, Washington County, Pulaski County, Boyle County

Analysis: This baby is wide open. None of these teams are state championship quality, but nonetheless, it should be a competitive tournament full of teams that know each other well. Gut feeling: go with Wayne County.

Happy Friday, Part I

Let's take a look at what Thursday had in store for us...

--It was the game of the day, and so far, it's probably the game of the year; Grayson County outlasted Christian County in 10 innings, beating the Colonels 7-6. What a week for the Cougars! They defeat a solid Warren East team, destroy new 3rd region foe Meade County and beat a top-10 team in Christian County to ensure their place among the state's elite.

--Mercy has now won two in a row. After an opening loss to Male, Mercy came back with wins over Fern Creek and, yesterday, Sacred Heart by a 7-1 margin.

--Lexington Catholic is off to a tough start so far. The Knights are 0-3 with all losses coming by a one-run margin. Yesterday, it was Model who knocked off Catholic.

--Who's my Cinderella to watch in the 11th region? How about Woodford County? The Yellow Jackets are off to a good start, with wins over Lexington Catholic and Anderson County and a close loss to state power (?) Estill County.

--The titans of the 4th both added wins yesterday as well. ACS dusted off Monroe County 10-0 in six innings, and Greenwood dominated defending 5th region champ Larue County 9-1.

Also, in the C-J's 7th region preview, I read that Manual's star pitcher Becca Saksefski was injured in Manual's win over Male on Wednesday. We have our eye on this situation as it unfolds.

Looking back and ahead

Wednesday is usually a down day for scheduled games, but we had a few worth mentioning...

--#6 Christian County got a nice win over Evansville Harrison (IN) 3-2. The Colonels are one of the three teams to watch in the 2nd region; #3 Henderson County and #14 Hopkins County Central are the other two worth watching this season.

--#9 Manual defeated #19 Male 2-0 in another 25th district showdown. We'll be watching this district all year long, as I have deemed it to be the best district in the state. Male has also played district rival Mercy this week, beating them 9-3 in 8 innings.

--Speaking of #17 Mercy, they bounced back with a 7-0 win over Fern Creek.

--Want a fast start? Try Shelby County, who has played three games in three days and won them all. With Scott County exiting the 8th region for the 11th, look for the Rockets to be favorited in the 8th region.

Wednesday Wrap-up

I'm all into clever titles, and I think I got a good one going here. No matter, let's take a look at the Monday leftovers and what Tuesday had in store...

Monday

--#1 Greenwood started their season with a bang, romping lowly Logan County 14-1. It was Rachel Riley pitching for the Gators instead of Brittany York, the UL signee and the probable Miss Softball frontrunner. There aren't many teams who can throw two all-state candidates out there like Greenwood. The Bowling Green Daily News even goes this far...

While York is the Lady Gators’ ace, the team’s No. 2 pitcher – sophomore Rachel Riley – is arguably the second-best pitcher in the Fourth Region.

I know a few Allen County-Scottsville Patriots who would certainly argue with that statement.

--We have an official sleeper in the 1st region. St. Mary defeated 2004 state champion Calloway County (also ranked #23 in the preseason poll) by a score of 10-2. Can St. Mary challenge Reidland in the 1st region? I think so...

--Also, Shelby County got off to a good start with an 8-1 win over Eminence. The Rockets will benefit from Scott County's move to the 11th region and should be the favorite to win the 8th region.

Tuesday

--Offense was supposed to be a concern for the Allen County-Scottsville Patriots, but the 4th region champs opened with a bang yesterday by destroying new 4th region foe Russell County 16-0 in only four innings. The Patriots boast arguably the most impressive pitching staff in the state, led by senior Jamie Ogles. If ACS can consistently hit the ball, they will give Greenwood all they want and then some in the 4th region.

--New faces in new places: both South Laurel and North Laurel moved to the 13th region, but the two seem to have not forgotten their competitive ways. In the Battle of London, North beat South yesterday 3-2. It would be silly to think that the 13th regional tournament wouldn't come down to these two in the end.

--Welcome to the 3rd region, Meade County. Grayson County gave the new 3rd region team a good ol' country arse-whoopin', shelling them 12-1. It was a bit surprising to see Grayson County win this impressively after losing so much talent, but this win validates their place among the state's elite. Could this be the year that the Cougars take down Catholic?

--Greenwood wasn't impressive, but the Gators defeated Edmonson County by a score of 3-0. Edmonson County was a force in the 4th region last season (they beat ACS 1-0 early on), but a move to Grayson County's district and region eliminates their progress in the 4th. However, if Meade County can't challenge Grayson and Catholic, can Edmonson throw a wrench into things? I doubt it.

Things I'm Seeing

All of Monday's scores haven't been posted yet [one wonders if these games were played and somebody's too lazy to post the scores or all of them were canceled (I'm guessing the former)] , but here are some thoughts I had while reading the scores...

--We all know that Henderson County has one of the best (if not the best) pitcher in the state in Stacy Whitmer, but Providence can probably attest that the Colonels have a good offense as well...26 RUNS IN THREE INNINGS! Good form with the bats there.

--Is there a tougher district than the 25th? The three M's--Male, Mercy and Manuel--form a district that probably rivals the 42nd in basketball (Henry Clay, Scott County, Bryan Station). Male took the early lead with a 9-3 beatdown of Mercy.

--Grayson County lost arguably the two best seniors in the state but still apparently has the talent to win big games; they beat 4th region sleeper Warren East 5-0 to open the season.

--Meade County won their 3rd region debut by outhitting Southern 16-12. Meade County probably won't win their region, but they could throw a big scare into the joint-dictatorship of Owensboro Catholic and Grayson County. We'll see how well Meade County measures up to their new competition, as they host Grayson County today.

--Ballard and Estill County, 2nd and 4th respectively at the 2005 state tournament, opened their seasons with impressive wins. Ballard beat the 8th region's Oldham County 6-0, and Estill County proved they belong as the Engineers (my nomination for coolest mascot in the state) choo-chooed to a 2-1 win over Lexington Catholic.

What to watch for today...

As we will see often, the scoreboard at KHSAA.com likes to lie to us. There were two Beth Haven games scheduled for Saturday, but those scores haven't been posted, so we are to assume that they never happened and the scoreboard told a falsehood. Sigh...

I guess a basketball blog didn't stick as well as I wanted it to, so I'm not gonna wait around until October to try that again. Let's try this baby out on the mother of all spring sports--high school softball.

Of course, it would be a little unfair of me to say that, seeing that I've only been a fan of this thing for going on a year now. But nevertheless, I'm publishing this thing to make you think that I know everything there is to know about high school softball.

Haha, but the trick's on you because I know very little! But this is gonna be fun, and I hope I keep the blog updated throughout the year, from tomorrow to the state championship game in J-Town (coincidentally, the home of the 2006 boys' basketball state champs--the Jeffersontown Chargers)...

There are many storylines to follow this season. Will Owensboro Catholic repeat as state champions? What effect with the Laurels have as they move to their new region? Will the second region emerge as the best region in the state? Will Greenwood finally suck it up and take down ACS in the fourth region? Will an Eastern Kentucky team pull an Estill County and go all Cinderella on us?
